The Township of Pelee Island has appointed a new integrity commissioner.

A special meeting of council took place Tuesday where council members appointed David B. Boghosian of Boghosian + Allen LLP to serve as the island’s new integrity commissioner.

Mayor Cathy Miller says council reviewed the proposals at the August 11 council meeting.

According to the staff report, administration received four submissions for the position but is recommending David B. Boghosian based on efficient timelines, extensive experience in integrity commissioner services, and beneficial staff resources.

Miller says Boghosian’s contract will run for the next four years.

“We’ve had an integrity commissioner all along, and this is an effort to appoint a new integrity commissioner starting, I guess, tomorrow technically for the next term of council right through 2030,” says Miller.

She says she supported staff’s recommendation at the last council meeting.

“From what council was presented there’s fulsome applications provided as part of the RFP process, and I 100 per cent support staff’s recommendation on this,” she says.

Miller says Boghosian is from a law firm, and it is a professional service.

She says the position is provincially legislative, and there’s no way of avoiding the costs associated with an integrity commissioner.

“The best way to avoid the costs is that all councillors act with integrity at all times and avoid those costly investigations that can really add to the bottom line of a municipality,” she says.

Boghosian is currently the integrity commissioner for 16 municipalities.

Bruce P. Elman LL.D. has been the island’s integrity commissioner since August 2023.
