The annual event raises money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ontario
Pack for a Purpose is back just in time to help shoppers at the Real Canadian Superstore on Walker Rd. bag their Easter Groceries for a good cause.
Windsor Police Service joined athletes to help pack groceries in exchange for donations as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ontario. It's the sixth year for the event, one of many law enforcement continue year round to make sure Special Olympic athletes have what they need to succeed.
Constable Adam Young tells AM800 News fundraising is only part of what makes events like Pack for Purpose special.
"It gives them purpose, it gives them hope, and it gives them drive. They light up and thrive through that interaction within the community. We're providing that social framework that allows them come into their own," he says. "The athletes come out and work side-by-side with the officers ... it's just a wonderful relationship and a wonderful bond that we make with them."
He says the community never ceases to amaze everyone involved.
"The citizens of Windsor are so generous every year. They come out and they give all the time and the money goes to a great cause."
Last year's Pack for a Purpose raised $4,000 — that was well surpassed with year with a total of more than $6,600.
Young says anyone who couldn't make it out is welcome to stop by headquarters and ask to make a donation to the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics Ontario.
