The owner of a dog involved in a vicious attack on two young children in Wallaceburg last month has now been charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
On February 5, 2018 at 5pm, two young children and their babysitter were tobogganing at Jaycee Park when two dogs escaped from their home and attacked the youngest child.
A man and woman ran to the park to help the children — the six-year-old boy ran to safety while the three-year-old boy was carried from the scene to a home and 911 was called.
The boy was transferred to a Michigan hospital and has since been released.
The dogs were identified and both have been euthanized.
On March 23, 2018, police arrested the owner of the dog.
"Following a thorough investigation that the evidence did lead to laying the charge of criminal negligence by allowing her dogs to escape from the home," says Chatham-Kent Constable Renee Cowell. "She endangered the safety of others and unfortunately a young boy who was innocently playing at the park suffered the consequences."
Constable Cowell says police are not releasing the name of the accused saying, "this incident touched the hearts of many people in the Wallaceburg community, a young boy did sustain some very serious injuries as a result of the incident and we want to protect the privacy of everyone involved."
A 35-year-old Wallaceburg woman has been charged and will appear in court May 4.
