Overall crime in Windsor was down 33 per cent last month, compared to June 2019.
Police say there were 1,127 criminal code violations last month and Deputy Chief of Operations Jason Bellaire believes the COVID-19 pandemic played a role in the reduced crime numbers.
"I would speculate quite strongly that the pandemic and the restrictions in place with the pandemic and the behaviours associated with people living under the umbrella of a pandemic have probably affected the degree which we come into contact with people," says Bellaire. "So we don't have the bigger crowds that we usually have this time of year in Windsor."
Bellaire says Windsor police are pleased to see a drop in overall crime but continue to look at the bigger picture.
"We're looking over things like five year averages and stuff and we just don't want a safe community in June, we want a safe community all year, every year so we're always happy to see crime stats go down but we do know that next month they could go up," says Bellaire.
"Property crime from our experience runs in trends," he adds. "So it could be specific people who are committing multiple property crimes and then if they just stop or perhaps they're arrested or detained or incarcerated or other wise they're not out there anymore, that can actually have a significant impact on our property crime."
Overall crime is June increased by roughly nine per cent compared to May.
There were 222 violent crime incidents in June, a drop of 23 incidents compared to June 2019 and no homicides.
