Windsor's CAO says contracting out janitorial services at the city-operated Huron Lodge will save money, but not until 2020.
Onorio Colucci explained to AM800 listeners on the Lynn Martin Show that the cost of transitioning staff will eat up any savings for about 3 years.
Council will be presented with a report tonight recommending the work be contracted out to Aramark.
Colucci says there will be a substantial cost to avoid impact on the full time workers: "administration is recommending using some one-time money of $1.9-million to essentially keep all the extra regular full-time employees while we look for attrition"
Colucci says because of the payout, the expected $600,000 annual saving will be delayed until after the first 3 years.
He says they have already begun to trim back staff at Huron Lodge with only 10 of the 16 full time positions currently filled.
The debate this evening is expected to be contentious with CUPE 543, which represents the staff along with others from the community speaking out against the move.
Local President Mark Vandervoort says the city has not shared details of its transition plan for the members at Huron Lodge.
