Coats for Kids needs residents to dig deep — into their closets.
The Unemployed Help Centre of Windsor kicked of its annual coat distribution drive on Saturday and will continue throughout the week at several locations in Windsor-Essex.
More than 3,000 new or gently-used coats are ready to be given to those in need but Help Centre CEO June Muir says they need more.
Muir says that's because they distribute jackets past the final day of the distribution drive every year.
"We still give out coats and we still have many families that need them," she says. "We like to have 6,000. It's been our goal each and every year and we've made that goal."
She tells AM800 News, the program is a great way to help those struggling financially make ends meet.
"We see a lot of families coming in, they're working families, but they may only be earning minimum-wage," says Muir. "It's really difficult when you've got five children, to purchase coats. They come in, and they're so happy to be able to get a coat."
If the weather requires a jacket, Muir says that's how long the program will be there to help out.
"We keep the program going until the spring-time," she says. "If you need a coat we're there to support you, and if you have coats to donate, please donate them."
Muir says they're looking for both boys and girls coats, but the help centre will take coats for all ages.
She says those who need a coat shouldn't be afraid to stop in, no matter what their situation may be.
