Police will be out in full force for the Canada Day weekend
With the Canada Day long weekend set to get underway, Provincial Police are reminding drivers to slow down.
Sergeant Kevin Martin who says officers will be out in full force looking for speeders and aggressive drivers.
"You want to go to a cottage, go to a friend's, go to family. We understand you want to travel," says Martin. "With that increase in traffic, we have to understand it may take a little longer to get where we're going. Perhaps there's a motor vehicle crash, perhaps there's construction. So above all, make sure you leave in plenty of time to get where you're going."
Martin says aggressive driving covers a wide range of offences.
Speeding, tailgating, an unsafe lane change, some people call them "lane jockeys", they're moving back and forth without any signals. These are all risky behaviours," he says. "These are leading to collisions, sometimes involving serious injury or death and we don't want to have this weekend feature any of those situations."
In 2017, 75 people were killed in speed related crashes on OPP patrolled roads --- the highest total in five years.
The OPP laid close to 213,000 speeding charges and more than 4,800 street racing charges in 2017.
