Provincial police are worried about an increase in drivers going the 'wrong way' on highways across Ontario.
Between October 5 and November 5 of this year, the OPP responded to 25 reports of a vehicle travelling the wrong way. A crash occurred in five of those cases and two people died.
So far in 2018 there have been 207 cases of wrong-way vehicle incidents on OPP-patrolled roads compared to 182 in all of 2017.
Speaking on AM800's 'The Morning Drive', OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says in the last 30 days, there have been 25 reports of vehicles travelling the wrong way.
"Those occurrences can obviously be horrific and tragic. Of those 25 over the last month we had five crashes that resulted, two people died in two separate collisions because of that."
Sergeant Schmidt says there have been 207 cases already this year.
"Sometimes these drivers are able to figure out what's going on and get turned around. Other times they keep going and we get flooded with 9-1-1 calls which are so crucial to get these vehicles stopped and intercepted before they cause a crash."
Schmidt adds that impaired and elderly drivers make-up a number of the cases involving wrong way drivers.
