Ontario Provincial Police have been cleared of wrong doing following a crash on Highway 3 that resulted in serious injuries.
The province's Special Investigations Unit has been looking into the events of December 10, 2022 when Windsor Police requested help from the OPP in locating two vehicles involved in ongoing criminal activity, including multiple thefts and hit and run investigations, which led to a chase.
A tire deflation device was deployed on one of the vehicles but was ineffective and the pursuit was called off, but after the vehicles were located again, the SIU says an OPP cruiser was intentionally struck causing minor damage and the suspect vehicle fled the scene.
A second spike belt was used around 1:30 a.m. and the SIU says the driver of a pick-up truck tried to avoid it but left the roadway and crashed into a ditch between Cameron and Marsh Side Roads.
The 28-year old man was thrown from the vehicle and rushed to hospital with neck and back injuries and was later diagnosed with a fractured nose and back.
SIU Director Joseph Martino has found no reasonable grounds to believe an OPP officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the serious injuries suffered by the suspect.
