The OPP and Windsor police are holding a Gun Amnesty next month.
It's for any Ontario resident who wants to get rid of or surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition.
Police say the amnesty is a way to "provide citizens with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety."
OPP Sgt. Dave Rektor says the goal is simple. "We want people who no longer want their weapons or have illegally owned firearms, other weapons, accessories or ammunition, to use the month of April to to turn them info police with no consequence."
Rektor says no anonymous submissions will be accepted. "If you're interested you have to call the OPP, your local police service, on a non-emergency number obviously. We'll have officers attend and retrieve the guns. You can also sign up online for the gun amnesty program or use the citizen self reporting tool, to notify police of your intention."
But Rektor says not just any weapon can be turned over. "We want everybody to realize that no amnesty is offered for people that turn in weapons that have been used in the commission of an offense. We want to make sure that this is for law abiding citizens who are just wanting to get rid of the burden of gun ownership."
Interested gun owners are asked to call the OPP or their local police service, non-emergency line. Under NO circumstances should anybody deliver guns or ammunition directly to police facilities.
