Amid pressure from parents of children with autism, the Province of Ontario is making several tweaks to its controversial autism funding program.
The changes will eliminate income testing and explore supports based on need.
Since Children, Community and Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod announced the plan last month, many parents have been worried their kids would be left without access to the programming they need.
In order to clear a waiting list of 23,000 children, MacLeod had previously announced parents would receive direct funding, with caps of up to $20,000 per year for children under six and $5,000 a year for children six to 18.
The minister now says the government is looking at how to provide support based on the diagnosed need of the child.
MacLeod adds Ontario will now spend the most per capita on autism in North America.
