If you get a phone call that appears to be from the provinces Special Investigations Unit (SIU), be on alert.
The police watchdog has learned there is a group using its toll free number — 1-800-787-8529 — for fraudulent purposes.
In some cases, the person contacted is told that there is something wrong with their Social Insurance Number, and that if they don't continue with the call by pressing ‘1’ or ‘2’, they will be charged or jailed.
It's a similar to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam which uses the CRA as a cover to gain personal information.
The SIU makes it clear they do not contact people about that kind of information and if you receive a call, you're asked to reach out to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
