Greg Essensa believes the change could provide easier access to polling stations at schools while also keeping children safe
Sweeping changes are being recommended by Ontario's chief electoral officer for the next provincial election.
Greg Essensa has released his post-vote report for Ontario's 2018 election and would like to see the 2022 election held on a weekend or holiday.
Essensa gives several reasons for the change including providing easier access to polling stations at schools while also keeping children safe.
Elections Ontario currently pays for security at schools, but Essensa believes the safety of children would be enhanced further if voting was moved to a day when classes weren't in session.
This is one of 13 recommendations in the report titled 'Modernizing Ontario's Electoral Process.'
Essensa is also calling for a longer writ period to ease the workload for Elections Ontario staff and provisions to allow the agency to hand out fines for minor election law violations.
