The provincial government will provide funding under the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) for those impacted by last week's flooding.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says he received word Thursday morning from the province prior to touring impacted areas with Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.
Horwath toured a number of affected areas with the mayor along with the NDP MPPs Percy Hatfield, Lisa Gretzky and Taras Natyshak.
She says after seeing the damage done by the storm, she'll will be pushing the premier's office for additional funding for those impacted.
Horwath says it's a very bad situation for Windsor.
"I think seeing it in person really does, provides me with the prospective necessary to go back now and put some pressure on the government to help out, help the community and to help the families that are affected," says Horwath.
She says it's sad to see how much damage occurred.
"It's quite shocking to see people's lives so disrupted and they're entire families in such a bad state and such a crisis mode with the results of the flood. I mean it's a very bad situation," says Horwath.
She says it's very worrisome that the insurance industry has turned its back on those affected.
"Families who were flooded less than a year ago and they're flooded again and they can't get insurance, they don't have insurance, the insurance companies are walking away," says Horwath. "That's not right. Insurance is suppose to be fair for people when they have something unexpected occur right, that's what insurance is for."
DRAO is only provided to those residents who qualify.
To receive funding, qualified residents will have to apply.
