There's a new tool in Windsor-Essex to help the not-for-profit sector become more diverse.
"DiverseCity OnBoard" is an online program that offers governance training focused on helping the minority population gain leadership roles in the community on boards of directors.
The MultiCultural Council of Windsor-Essex and United Way of Windsor-Essex have partnered to offer the program.
United Way Executive Director Lorraine Goddard says there is a significant diversity gap that needs to be addressed.
"When you have people with all the same backgrounds, who are responsible for the governance of organizations that serve communities, you clearly would be missing information or consideration in order to better serve your local community," says Goddard.
She says the majority of the boards are mostly white and mostly men.
"Make it easier for people who are visible minorities, from the LGBT community, it could be women, so those under represented populations to obtain training," says Goddard.
The program is offered in eight cities in Canada.
