A report looking at options to re-instate one hour free parking downtown has been received...with no direction provided.
The Environment, Transportation and Public Safety Standing Committee decided to accept the report saying the issue needs to be debated at the full council level.
The report was prompted by a question from Ward 3 Councillor Rino Bortolin who wanted to see what cost-neutral options there were to re-instate the program which was eliminated in the 2016 budget.
Administration is against re-instated one-hour free parking.
Ward 9 Councillor Kieran McKenzie says the issue needs to be debated by council.
"That's a debate that really needs to happen in the council chamber particularly with the councillor who brought the question forward and the councillor who represents the area that is going to be primarily impacted by whatever it is that is decided."
McKenzie says he needs more information before making a decision.
"Have some discussions with the stakeholders, there was just a newly elected BIA for the downtown core, their views need to be represented. We need a big and informed debate with as many stakeholders as we can bring forward to the table who really understand these issues, they are complicated."
The Downtown Windsor BIA reviewed the report and is in favour of providing parking for the first hour free for those people parking two hours or less in the Pelissier St. parking garage.
The cost of implementing it was estimated at $52,000 for 2017.
