Todd McLellan was shown the door after the NHL team lost six of its last seven games.
The Oilers have brought in Ken Hitchcock who retired from Dallas.
The 51-year-old McLellan had a record of 123-119-24 in just over three years behind the bench.
The news follows the firing of Mike Yeo as head coach of the St. Louis Blues.
The NHL team fire Yeo after St. Louis lost 2-0 to the L.A. Kings on Monday night.
Craig Berube will take over as the team's interim coach.
The Blues are 7-9-and-3 and have lost four of their last five games.
