Unexpected repairs at the Sandwich Secondary School track have forced the OFSAA West Regional Track and Field Championships to move.
The event slated for Friday and Saturday will now take place at the track at University of Windsor.
Public School Board Spokesperson Scott Scantlebury say the rubberized surface on the track was lifting which is a safety and performance concern.
As a result, the championships had to move locations.
"It is strictly a safety and performance situation," he says.
Scantlebury says the rubberized track was installed 14-18 months ago and is under warranty.
"The repairs will be done soon, but obviously not in time for the track meet," says Scantlebury.
He says crews don't know what caused the adhesive to fail but it may have to do with the extreme weather conditions.
Scantlebury calls the move 'unfortunate' saying the track at Sandwich is the top track in the region and it will host future events.
