Let the digging begin.
An official groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the installation of a 150-foot flag pole at the foot of Ouellette Avenue.
The goal is to have a 60ft x 30ft Canadian flag fluttering in the breeze this spring.
The Chair of the Great Canadian Flag Project, Peter Hrastovec, says work will move quickly. "In the next 3-5 weeks, depending on when product is delivered, you are going to see some very serious installation being done in respect to the foundation and our goal is to have the flag up by April."
Construction Manager Dave Woodall says crews will dig a 14 sq ft wide and 4.5 ft deep hole that will be filled with concrete on piles that go down 70 ft.
The project fundraising campaign has raised $300,000, is about $60,000 short of the overall goal which includes maintenance funds.
