The Ontario Fire Marshal has determined that a fire in a Rivard Avenue apartment was the result of careless smoking.
Investigator Dave Emberlin says there was a working smoke detector in the unit, but the battery had been removed.
He says there's no question the victim would have escaped serious injury had the smoke detector been working properly.
The woman in the unit was transferred to a London hospital last week in critical condition with 3rd degree burns.
The fire in unit 204 of 2420 Rivard Avenue last Thursday afternoon caused $15,000 damage.
