The doors are officially open at a new student residence at the University of Windsor.
On Thursday, Canterbury College held a blessing along with a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new residence on Patricia Street.
College Principal Gordon Drake says the home features 62 rooms and sends an important signal that the college is here to stay.
"We are here for the long term as a part of the life of the University of Windsor," says Drake. "Our objective is to provide the kind of academic environment where students can achieve their goals and build a complete person, mind, body and spirit."
He says the response from students has been positive.
"It's completely sold-out," says Drake. "It was sold-out actually at the beginning of August. Students are already making bookings for next year. So we're already starting to fill up for 2020."
He says the college's Jeffery Fisher Hall is always full and a new residence is needed.
"We were overbooked," says Drake. "We had a waiting list for apartments and so we perceived a very real need for apartment type accommodation and we also recognize unique advantage of having individual bathrooms in each apartment."
Construction on the $6-million project started in August 2018.
Gordon says students were able to move in prior to the start of the fall semester.
The residence is called "Canterbury Commons."
