In the near future you'll be able to pay for your parking in Windsor from your smart phone.
Council has approved moving ahead with implementing the system in partnership with a company called PassportParking.
An app needs to be downloaded onto the phone which allows payment for parking along with tracking time. The cost to the city is $18,000 a year plus a setup cost of $15,000 and there is a convenience fee of 15-cents each time to use the system.
Windsor Supervisor of Parking Enforcement, Bill Krawlovinsky, explained the system to AM800 listeners on The Lynn Martin Show.
He says once you open the app, the system will guide you.
"You're going to see some zones and meter numbers etc. — you just go in type the zone number and meter number and the amount of time you want," says Krawlovinsky. "It goes right onto the app with this comes new enforcement tools and it lets our enforcement officers on the street know which car is paid and which isn't."
He says if your time is running out, there are options.
"We give you a warning, 'Hey, you're just about out of time. What do you want to do, do you want to pay again or do you want to have the enforcement officer come around?,'" says Krawlovinsky. "So, you go in and make your payment add another hour or whatever to the max. The other part with the 15 cents is, as soon as you do it once, the convenience fee is only charged once at the meter."
Krawlovinsky says the Passport Parking app is in use in several cities already including Detroit.
He says you can only extend the parking at one location to the maximum allowed at that meter or lot.
