There's a call for new blood donors in Windsor-Essex because of new guidelines when it comes to blood donations.
Starting December 10th, the waiting period between donations jumps from 8 weeks to 12 for female donors and males will have to pass a slightly stricter hemoglobin test starting next March.
Canadian Blood Services Territory Manager, Marisa Gatfield says that means as many as 246 new local donors are needed within the next four weeks. "Donor health is a priority and planned changes mean that many donors will not be able to give as often, which will affect Canada's blood supply. So as many donors will be able to donate as often, other Canadians must step forward to fill this gap and encourage their family and friends to give."
Gatfield says "one in two people are eligible to give blood but only one in sixty actually do."
The changes follow a study on the impact of donation on iron levels.
The Canadian Blood Services clinic is at 3909 Grand Marais Rd. E. in Windsor. It encourages people to book an appointment, but walk-ins are welcomed.
