It was all smiling faces as a group of new Canadians took the oath of citizenship pledging allegiance to Canada and the Queen.
Wednesday's ceremony at HMCS Hunter brought 42 new people to Canadian citizenship from 17 countries.
The El Hindawi family of eight people came from Syria, eldest son Mohammad Noor El Hindawi says this opens new doors.
"The way we lived in Syria it was like in a war, everybody is controlled you cannot do any moves. But when you come to Canada and you become a Canadian it opens a new life"
Joanna Sanchez is originally from Mexico City and tells AM800's Peter Langille she is happy to be a Canadian now.

"Canada is a beautiful country, I've actually been here for 17 years so it feels like home. 'how does it feel now to be a citizen' It feels amazing, it's a great feeling"
Renes Calixte came from Haiti for the peacefulness of Canada.
"To get a little bit peace because in our country we are having difficulty because the government is not in the hands we want it to be because Canada is the place we can help us to succeed and what you need in our future, that's why I am here"
Family members and friends took photos with representatives of the RCMP, Windsor police, Canadian Navy and Port Authority.
