Amherstburg officially announced the appointment of their new fire chief Monday.
The town passed a motion hiring recently retired Windsor Fire and Rescue Chief Bruce Montone.
After 40 years-of-service Montone is still grateful to be chosen to serve the community.
"I'm humbled by the trust and the responsibility that council has put in front of me and I'm going to do my very best to live up to it," says Montone.
Outgoing Amherstburg Fire and Rescue Chief Al Reaume says he's been in talks with Montone for about a month.
The town's fire protection plan is set to expire soon.
Reaume told AM800 News, Montone is the perfect choice to prepare a new strategy.
"Those are in depth studies that have to be done, so you either hire an outside contractor to do them, or you hire a chief that can do it," says Reaume.
Organizing a new plan is something Montone says he's ready to tackle.
"One of their priorities is to put a five year master-fire-protection-plan together and that's certainly something that I'm quite familiar with. I did it in Windsor, I did it in Ottawa, and I did it for most of the time I was with the Office of the Fire Marshall," Montone says.
It's only been a couple years since the firing of Reaume's predecessor and two fire fighters.
The Ministry of Labour handed down more than 20 orders in 2015, according to Reaume.
Montone says he's looking forward to advancing the work Reaume's done to turn things around.
"Chief Reaume has sort of righted the ship following that situation, and so they really need to put in place a plan that's going to see them continue with their improvement over the next five to 10 years," Montone says.
Reaume's last act as Chief will be attending an awards banquet on Saturday April 22, Montone will take over first thing the following Monday.
