Nemak is the latest local manufacturer to shut down in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Unifor Local 200 President John D'Agnolo confirms around 170 employees will stay home until the end of March.
He tells AM800 News Nemak supplies engine blocks to the GM plant in Flint, Mich. and General Motors closed down that operation Thursday night.
Nemak was the scene of a blockade and extended legal battle that began in September 2019.
It came after the company announced it would close the plant in 2020 and move production to Mexico.
An arbitrator ruled the company was within its right to move production.
