Close to 10,000 people have signed a petition to save 50 acres of the South Cameron Woodlot.
The province has removed the provincially significant wetland designation on the property, opening it up to potential development.
At Windsor City Council Monday night, Ward 10 Councillor Jim Morrison submitted a petition to protect the land.
He says he has received daily emails and phone calls about the issue.
"We have been knocking down trees over the last number of years, so this is kind of a time for us really to stop and take a pause. Have we not done enough of that destruction of our woodlots?" Asks Morrison.
"This is something that people feel really strongly about. It is a beautiful nature area and it is not just the land itself, it is the wildlife."
Morrison says the petition doesn't solve the issue as some people actually own that property.
The petition was launched by Windsor resident Kaitlin Kennedy.
Mayor Drew Dilkens says the original designation by the province was flawed and was done by a bureaucrat in Aylmer who never visited the city.
