The provincial New Democrats are putting forth a motion to deal with climate change disasters.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is bringing a motion to recognize climate change as an imminent threat to Ontario's environment, people and economy, and declare a climate emergency in the province.
"What it would do is enable the government to utilize public funds to not only mitigate damage that's being done but to take action on initiatives that will help to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions," says Horwath.
Horwath adds they want the Ford government to be better stewards of the environment.
"You need to support this motion and start reversing the cuts that you've already made," says Horwath. "Cuts to things like the 50-million tree program, where 50-million trees are to be planted to help with soil erosion."
Horwath says the PC government is heading in the wrong direction on climate issues.
"When we're having floods around the province you don't cut 50 per cent of the conservation authorities' capacity to do flood water management programs and plans. I mean that's just absolutely backwards," says Horwath.
Horwath says they want the Ford government to acknowledge there are impacts of climate change and to do something about it.
