It didn't take long for the NDP to renew its calls for an Ontario Auto and Manufacturing Strategy.
Fueled by Ford's announcement this week that it was cutting another 450 jobs from its Oakville Assembly Plant, Windsor-West NDP MPP Lisa Gretzky questioned when the province will step in.
The Ontario legislature resumed sitting this week and Gretzky asked how many highly skilled people have to lose their jobs, before Premier Doug Ford takes action.
She pointed to Chrysler's third shift in Windsor which is still in jeopardy, along with Nemak's plan to move work to Mexico as proof that something needs to be done.
Gretzky says this week's announcement by Ford makes a dire situation, worse.
"I'm angry because Ford's Oakville Plant already lost 200 jobs in September," she says. "We must protect and grow the industry and ensure that government investments are made with ironclad commitments to keep jobs here."
She says it is time for action.
"The premier has done nothing but sit back and watch tens of thousands of jobs that have left Ontario," says Gretzky.
She points out that for every one direct job lost, Ontario loses as many as eight indirect jobs.
The jobs axed at Ford in Oakville will take place in February 2020.
