The Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County has announced the winners of its annul awards.
The Tepperman family is being honoured with the Harmony Award which recognizes individuals and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to building a welcoming community for all.
The department store, established by immigrants Nate and Rose Tepperman, became a Windsor institution. They and their descendants are being honoured for their work in the community.
The Champion Award is being presented to Lebanese-born Dr. Gordon Jasey, former head of Obstetrics at Grace Hospital.
Dr. Jasey was a founding member of the Arab-Canadian Intercultural Orientation Centre and the Windsor Islamic Association.
The Champion Award celebrates the contributions that immigrants make to our community.
The Inspire Award goes to Congolese refugees Charles Kayumbi and his wife Marceline Kolongo.
Since arriving in Canada in 2013 with four daughters and not speaking English, both have graduated college and are in professional positions.
The Inspire Award was established in 2018 to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County. It recognizes a newcomer to Windsor-Essex for their perseverance, optimism, and the positive example they provide to our community.
The awards will be presented at a gala May 2, 2019.
