Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky is introducing a private member's bill today to address a gap in end-of-life care.
It's called "Dan's Law" because of the situation faced by Windsor resident Dan Duma.
Duma had left the city when his job at the GM Transmission plant ended, worked in Alberta where he was diagnosed with cancer.
When he returned home to be with his family at the end of his life, Duma discovered he was not covered for homecare.
Gretzky says it's a Windsor situation at the centre of this, but it's happening across Ontario.
She says it's not right the province is forcing people in that situation to wait for 3 months:
Gretzky says the only coverage available in the situation Dan Duma faced is to go into a hospital: "if you want to talk about cost, which I'm sure will be an argument from the government side, it actually costs much much more for somebody to be in hospital than it would for them to receive home or community care"
Gretzky says the province is urging people to remain in their homes or use a service like Hospice at the end of their lives.
She says without the 3-month waiting period being waived, there is no other option except a hospital bed.
Gretzky will introduce the legislation today, and it will be debated November 17th.
