The MP for Windsor West is trying to make it a little easier for kids to play ball.
MP Brian Masse, Mike Morency of Nantais Sports and Windsor West Little League are collecting new and gently used baseball gloves for children ages 4 to 14.
They will be used at a free baseball drill clinic hosted by Masse at the St. Denis Centre next month.
Masse says for many kids, not having the proper equipment prevents them from even trying.
"We are kinda excited because it is one of the things that we see with organized sports, a decline on but at the same time, not everybody knows how to get their kids involved in a team sport like baseball," says Masse.
He adds for some families, the cost can be a challenge to start a new activity.
"If you haven't tried it before, it is hard to go out and spend the money on the gloves and equipment or even the registration so this is an opportunity that even if you don't join later on to try baseball for the first time," says Masse.
The gloves can be dropped off at Masse's office at 1398 Ouellette or at Nantais Sports at 2020 Tecumseh Rd. West.
The baseball clinic called "First Catch, First Pitch" takes place March 21st from 3pm-5pm
Masse says the initiative was started because the number of youth is down at the Windsor West Little League.
He believes there are a lot of benefits for kids who play organized sports as it promotes physical activity and positive youth development in building self-confidence.
