The MP for Windsor West wants to put an end to fraud.
Brian Masse is kicking off a campaign that includes a flyer being mailed to every constituent, consulting with the public and introducing legislation in parliament.
Masse says police and other agencies are doing parts of this, but it's fragmented and he wants it to be a more unified anti-fraud system.
He says statistics indicate $1.5-million is lost to fraudulent behaviour in Windsor-Essex every year.
Masse says this is not just a New Democrat move or his own, he expects all parties will be engaged.
He says the issue has been ignored in Ottawa for too long becuase it's been considered too complicated to delve into.
"II think this requires a government response at this point." said Masse, "I think the media has done its part public awareness, social media has done its part but the issue is so complicated in regards to you can be defrauded walking down the street, you could be defrauded by a phone call, by clicking something on an email"
Masse says the public has to be reached to fight back. He wants people to become activists.
He says seniors and those learning English as a second language are among the most vulnerable to fraud.
The mailing going out to Windsor West residents will identify the kinds of fraud and how to avoid being ripped off as well as who to reach out to in the event you are defrauded.
He believes a motion or legislation can be passed by the end of the year.
