Mothers Against Drunk Driving wants to empower the public to report suspected impaired drivers in Amherstburg.
The organization has taken a generous donation from Caesars Windsor Cares and turned it into a sign campaign that already has a presence across the city. Windsor already has 42-signs reminding the public to pullover and call 911 if they if they suspect someone is driving impaired and 15 more are on the way.
"People are always reminded of, not only the dangers of impaired driving, but at the same time that they do have the power to help society by calling 911 if they suspect that somebody is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol," says MADD Community Leader Chaouki Hamka who will be asking town council to approve 10 signs in Amherstburg Monday night.
Hamka says 911 stats show the signs have made a huge difference in Windsor and many other communities.
"We're seeing a 30% to 80% increase in impaired driving charges due to the public calling in and reporting suspected impaired driving," says Hamka.
He hopes council sees the value of the campaign.
"We did receive a significant donation from Caesars Windsor so the cost of the signs is taken care of 100%, there's no cost to them whatsoever," he says. "It's only going to help the community at the end of the day."
Hamka says MADD will be bringing its pitch to LaSalle and Leamington in March and is in the process of setting up a date with Essex town council as well.
