Statistics Canada is reporting an increase in the number of passengers using the Windsor International Airport.
From March to July jumped the volume of passengers per month has increased by nearly 1,000, with 2,354 passengers using the airport in March of this year compared with 3,352 in July.
Airport CEO Carolyn Brown says "we're definitely serving a lot more U.S. travellers who are using Windsor as their starting point to go to Toronto and then to go overseas. They're taking advantage, clearly, of the favourable exchange rate."
"The boost is showing around the airport" says Brown. "We have an onsite lounge and we have an onsite cafe, and so our projected numbers for those are clearly through the roof. The rental car companies are doing a very strong business, and our parking lot concessions are really doing well."
Brown adds that they need to expand the parking lot. "Our long term lot has been at maximum capacity for most of the summer. We have a small piece of property to the south, we have a small building on it that we can raze. We're going to raze that building and expand the parking lot."
She says new flights will be added on New Year's Eve, which include flights to Cuba and Cancun.
