The latest provincial test results at the Greater Essex County District School Board shows some students are struggling.
Students in local public schools were below the provincial average in Grade 3 reading, writing and math and below the provincial average in Grade 6 reading, writing and math in the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) 2016-2017 assessments.
They were also below in the Grade 10 literacy tests in terms of the percentage of students who were successful.
Board Director Erin Kelly says there are some positive aspects in the latest results.
"We always want to ensure that we are doing well, and yes we continue to work on those areas but there are some good celebrations and we have made marked improvements in reading scores particularly for students in special education in primary and junior division," she says.
"You have to remember that EQAO is a test of a very high standard and so it is not that students are failing, it is just that some students are not meeting the mark."
Students were above the provincial average in Grade 9 math testing, in both applied and academic math.
