A bit of a refresh at the Do Good Deli.
This from Downtown Mission Executive Director Ron Dunn who says they've formed a new partnership with east end Mexican restaurant Palenque.
The Do Good Deli was opened to provide on the job training while also creating a revenue stream for the Mission.
Dunn says staff from Palenque will now be running the deli.
"The Mission has reached out. We've partnered with a great, proven operator who has been running a successful business for quite some time. They're interested in training people who are seeking employment and getting them out into the workforce."
He says a certified chef will now be training employees.
"With Chef Ivan's background, when he signs the certificate of completion saying these people are trained, I think it'll have more weight than when I sign it. So we're just excited to have the partnership. It's reduced our risk, it's given us a great flavour in downtown, it's an exciting opportunity for everybody."
Dunn says it's a great opportunity for both Palenque and those looking to get back into the workforce.
"They cleaned and reorganized and set the menu up a little bit differently. They're still offering great food and creating a revenue source for the Mission. So really the business model has changed a little, but no other changes. The hours remain the same and the food is going to be better than it ever was, but more importantly, we're going to get people back to work through the training program."
The Do Good Deli was closed for three days for the revamp.
The restaurant at 875 Ouellette Ave has since reopened with a new twist to its menu.
