Temporary migrant farm workers will be allowed to travel to Canada after the Mexican government announced its secured promises for more inspections and oversight to curb outbreaks of COVID-19.
On June 16, Mexico announced a temporary ban on its citizens travelling to Canada after at least two Mexican men working in Essex County died due to COVID-19.
Hundreds more have also fallen ill on farms across the country after testing positive for the virus.
But the Mexican government says it has now struck a deal with the federal Liberal government that will lead to improvements in the temporary foreign worker program.
In a release late Sunday, Mexico says Canada has committed to increased inspections, as well as more support for Mexican officials and workers to identify and report unsafe working conditions.
A working group will also be set up with Mexican and Canadian government officials to deal with the issue.
Mexicans make up about half of the temporary foreign worker population employed in the agriculture sector, which in 2018 meant there were 25,060 people employed on farms, in greenhouses and other related jobs.
