Essex Town Council will be deciding on a lease extension for Harrow Health Centre's McGregor Satellite Office Monday night.
The clinic is currently only open four days a week with limited hours.
Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche says extended hours will be implemented soon, so the health centre wants to commit to the space in the McGregor Community Centre on Walker Rd and Blue St. for another five-more-years.
"The Harrow Family Health team is looking for a longer term agreement in a lease with the town of Essex for that particular part of the community centre," says. "We're going to have medical attention for the residents of McGregor going forward on a five day a week basis."
Meloche says council has been pushing for the medical centre to add hours for a long time — but a lack of clerical staff was hampering their efforts.
"It's been open, but it's been difficult because they never had a clerical staff sponsored by the province. In order to make it successful, to make it function properly. We needed that staff their to support whoever was there whether it's a nurse practitioner, whether it's a doctor," he says.
With provincial funding in place, Meloche says the last hurdle is to secure the property.
If approved, the five-year-extension will begin June 1 with the option to renew for an additional five years in April of 2021.
