Lakeshore Mayor Tom Bain feels Belle River needs a larger high school not a smaller one.
Citing empty pupil spaces, the Greater Essex County District School Board is looking to tear down the current school on South St. and build a smaller, modern high school in Belle River.
But Bain points out that the municipality continues to grow and more space will be needed for students. "Three new subdivisions will start in the immediate area of the school later this year," says Bain. "It's growth that we feel hopefully is going to continue for the next three to five years. The subdivisions are going to start this summer."
Bain says "I certainly like the idea of the modern version but I would hope that the board has done it's homework in checking with the municipality in the future growth that we're expecting."
The mayor hopes the school board contacts with the town so the town's planners can outline the growth projections for the next three to five years.
The school board has submitted an application for funding to the provincial government.
