A Windsor man who was scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday for stabbing a Windsor police officer, has died.
Justice Renee Pomerance was prepared to hand down the sentence for Michael Knapp but given Knapp's death, she concluded there are 'no practical consequences to accompany the decision.'
Following a trial, the 52-year-old Knapp, was convicted of aggravated assault, assaulting a police officer and uttering threats following an incident at Caesars Windsor in April 2016.
Security at the casino had called in the contract duty officer working at the casino, for a disorderly man.
The officer approached a man who pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer in the hand.
The officer managed to taser the suspect to gain control.
Justice Pomerance told the court, 'she was very saddened to learn of Mr. Knapp's passing' and called it a 'regrettable turn of events.'
The crown had been seeking a jail sentence.
Windsor police confirm that police are aware of the death, investigated and 'no foul play is suspected.'
