After more than 30 years wearing a police uniform, a longtime OPP sergeant is retiring.
Friday, April 27 is the last day on the job for OPP Sergeant Dave Rektor who is stepping away from policing.
"It's bitter-sweet," he says. "But having said that, when I step out the door of our regional headquarters for the last time today I'm going to take a second just to ponder and feel the weight of the world slide off my back"
Rektor has been the OPP spokesperson for the west region for the last 22 years.
He says one case will never leave him.
"On the criminal side was the murder of Tori Stafford, that will forever be with me as well as many of the other events I've had to be the spokesperson for."
He has been attending a seminary for several years and will be working in the ministry in terms of congregational care, hospital care, hospice work and he's ordained to do weddings.
While ministry may seem like a significant change, he says it's similar to policing in that you are working with people and helping them through their problems.
