The third annual Windsor-Essex Accessibility Awards are in the books.
Businesses, organizations and individuals who have gone above and beyond in making our community a better place to live for persons with disabilities are honoured at the event.
Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario's Barb Dwyer-Hart spoke on behalf of her building superintendent Peter Coupe — he won an award for inclusion and awareness of accessibility issues for all people in our community.
Dwyer-Hart tells AM800 News Coupe and his team always go above and beyond, but there was one accommodation he undertook on his own that stands out.
"Someone came into look at one of the apartments and his wheelchair was so big that he got stuck in the doors so Peter got a grant to make the door even bigger than what it had to be," she says. "He always goes above and beyond what the needs are."
She says making sure everyone has what they need is something Coupe and his team excel at daily.
"Every time we need something they're there for us and they always accommodate us anyway they can," says Dwyer. "Not just us, but the other people that live in that building as well."
In total, eight community members and organizations received awards at this year's ceremony.
