Some students in Windsor are debating some heavy global issues this week as part of the Global YounG7 summit simulation.
The event, founded in 2017 by the Italian Ministry of Education, is designed to encourage students to be aware of world issues.
In 2018, the event is taking part in Canada at Windsor's Assumption Catholic High School and Montreal.
Windsor was chosen by the Italian delegation as a destination for the event through a connection with the local International Education Dept.
50 Canadian and Italian students will be divided into different committees and will be debating climate change and preventing terrorism.
"We are so excited, like we never thought about coming here to Canada because we just won our simulation in Italy and when they told us, you are going to Canada, we were shocked," says 18-year-old Italian student Tea Hoxha. "It's easy to complain about the issues and what is going on nowadays, but not a lot of people are able to discuss what is going on."
Assumption High School student Alexa Mognon has been researching hybrid warfare, terrorism and extremism in the past few weeks preparing for the debates.
"I was very interested in this new idea of being a part of the G7 summit and being a part of a motivated youth that are looking towards building a better world for the future," she says.
The winners of the debate this week will take part in the next Global YounG7 Summit in France next year.
