It's 100-years for sea cadets in Windsor.
On Wednesday, the Navy League of Canada Windsor Branch concluded its anniversary celebration with a tree planting dedication ceremony.
Acting President Rita Eidukas says events were held throughout the year to mark the anniversary.
"We had flag raising back in May, momentoes for the cadets, a three day reunion that happened with about 150 who have returned back to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of cadets," says Eidukas. "This is the conclusion by planting a tree, being an oak tree."
She says there are roughly 80 sea cadets currently in Windsor.
"Every September is a new influx of youth coming in, that's 12 to 18 and every year we lose some senior cadets too," says Eidukas. "So it's a good program, it's a free program, they get their uniform, they get to sail in the summer, they get to go away, why not give it a try."
Eidukas says it's been a year of celebration.
"It's the next generation that's coming through," says Eidukas. "So we waited until the fall so there were new recruits who came in, like 20 new cadets to say what is this all about and I think they'll remember being out here in the snow, it's a fun thing to do in that aspect too."
The oak tree was planted in September outside the HMCS Hunter building on Mill Street.
There is also a bronze plaque at the base of the tree.
