It is the largest donation ever to Hospice of Windsor and Essex County
Local philanthropist Al Quesnel has donated $1-million to the organization which will be used for construction costs at the Empress Rd. facility and operational costs.
Hospice is adding two patient rooms, enlarging its family room, adding a sunroom, refreshing the facility and is in need of a new roof.
"With overhead of a million dollars, it is always something that is on-going so I figured I'd fill their tank a bit and make sure people are focused on what they are here to do, not worrying where the funds will be there," he says.
Quesnel also made the donation to honour the retirement of long-time executive director Carol Derbyshire.
Her last day is November 1, 2018.
The retired businessman has made several large donations to a variety of organizations recently.
"Just trying to do the good thing," he adds. "I've been blessed and I don't need all my money so that's why I'm spreading it around."
Derbyshire called Quesnel a 'white knight.'
