After being homeless for 48 hours, a local activist is drained not only physically -- but mentally.
Greg Lemay took part in a '48-hour Street Sleep' event where he slept on cardboard boxes and collected money and non-perishable food items for the Downtown Mission.
Lemay admits he came across a lot of homeless people with drug addictions and believes the lack of affordable housing is part of the root cause to the problem.
In one case, homeless people thought he was an undercover police officer and was using the trailer to scope out who was doing drugs. They encouraged Lemay to do drugs to prove he wasn't a police officer.
Lemay says it took a mental toll on him.
"It was pretty depressing," he says. "When people weren't around me and talking to me or somebody didn't visit, I get up in the morning and I think what am I doing out here all day, like what do you do."
Lemay is glad it was only 48 hours.
"Honestly, another night I don't think I could have done it. My mind was not right at the end, it wasn't good and I knew I was going home the next day."
Lemay collected over $3,000 and a trailer full of food.
He was homeless from Friday, November 16 at 5pm to Sunday, November 18 at 5pm.
