The grand total is in and local gyms have raised more than $125,000 to fight cancer in one afternoon.
Close to 500 rowers from 10 gyms packed the main bowl of the WFCU Centre earlier this month for the Crews and Brews Row Against Cancer.
Amherstburg's Garage Gym and GL Heritage Brewery held a smaller event in 2017 in support of GL owner Greg Grondin's father, raising $40,000 in one day.
Fast forward two years and the pair decided to hold a larger event to benefit the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation's Grow On Windsor campaign.
Executive Director Houida Kassem tells AM800 News the community stepped up in a huge way.
"They ended up raising more than $40,000, fast forward a couple years later, they decided to try it again, but this time they wanted to do it on a bigger scale," she says. "The owner of Garage Gym, Tony Smith, made a phone call to a couple of gyms in our community and within 24-hours 10 gyms said, 'yeah, we're in.'"
She says hundreds of people showed up to row and cheer on their friends.
"It's absolutely beautiful to see the collaboration of people in our community. Almost 500 rowers all working together for one great cause; to raise $125,000 is unheard of," says Kassem.
Kassem says all the money raised stays in Windsor-Essex.
"Purchase things like bladder scanners, IV poles, there's so many things that we've been able to cover each and every year," she says. "So when you have these campaigns, we're ensuring that whatever the cancer centre is looking for, we're going to able to provide that."
Kassem says plans are already in the works to hold another row this time next year.
