The Windsor Squash and Fitness Club plays host to the 2018 Cienna Canadian Team Championships starting today and running through Sunday.
It's the first time a national event has been awarded to Windsor with 50 of the best players in Canada taking part. Many play professionally on the PSA World Tour and are ranked among the top 50 internationally.
David Morrish is the Assistant Professional at Windsor Squash and Fitness. He says several of the elite players are hoping to cash a paycheque this weekend.
"There's a good dozen Canadians on the circuit right now, it's encouraged them to stay and play because they've got a good chance of at least earn the kind of prize money they'd have earned if they'd gone off and played a tournament elsewhere," he says.
Morrish says the public is welcome to come check out the action at their 2475 McDougall Ave. location.
"Squash is one of those sports that unfortunately hasn't quite got out there to the public unless you're involved in the game," he says. "I would like to think that there will be some serious people that would want to come ... the very best players are here."
Samantha Cornett and Hollie Naughton from Ontario are currently ranked 26 and 33 in the world respectively, with Cornett qualifying for the upcoming Common Wealth Games in April.
The winners, runners up and third place teams will split $21,000.
