The student protest is in response to the strike by support staff
As a strike by 370 unionized support staff at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School board enters day number five, students at St. Anne High School are planning a peaceful protest today.
Antonio Roy is in grade 12 at St. Anne and says organizers have received a lot of on-line support. "Things were Tweeted out and within minutes we had people from different schools emailing and texting us saying, 'is this real, is this happening?' We've had a lot of support from our own students. We estimate all the senior students, Grade 12 students, are going to be doing it. And we hope that the junior students will also join doing it."
The students plan to walk out of class at 11am.
"The goal is to draw attention to how students are being affected by the strike" says Roy. "This week has honestly been one of the most hectic weeks in all my high school career. There has been delays as you may know because of the picket lines, and it's caused a lot of teachers to not even be allowed to be in school until 1:30pm, so basically 4th period, the end of the day. The janitors are not here so the schools have been littered with filth."
He hopes the protest prompts a return to the bargaining table.
